Roger started Taekwondo in 1984 and gained his 3rd Dan black belt under Tessa van Velsen. http://www.europataekwondo.com. Roger started to help out in the classes, which
led to him instructing when Tessa was away and he is also a
guest instructor at Merrill Lynch, in the City of London. Roger decided to stop training in 2003, although he continues to teach and grade pupils. His introduction to Krav Maga was with Soo Dixon, in London, and then he got into serious training with Jon Hegan, in Upminster. Jon is one of the highest grade of Krav Maga instructors in the country, has the longest running club and has a wealth of experience of other fighting methods. www.kravmagacombat.com Roger did the instructors course in 2002 and after passing started teaching in May 2003 and now has one of the longest running academies in the UK. His students have either arrived at his club after trying the martial arts or have no prior knowledge of any form of fighting art. Both types are equally welcome and age is no barrier. He still strives to
improve and still trains with Jon Hegan when possible. He is also a student of boxing, BJJ, MMA and Kickboxing and regularly attends Krav Maga
seminars and classes, here and abroad. Roger is now
Graduate Level 5 status (G5). Apart from his regular classes Roger also takes seminars
and tailors courses to suit. These have included ground fighting and
womens self defence as well as pure Krav Maga seminars. Any up and
coming seminars are posted on the news page. Roger is also a F.A.S.T. Defence and F.A.S.T. Combatives coach. www.fastdefense.com Fear Adrenal Stress Training deals with the mental and physical sides of both the pre-fight and the fight itself. We start with showing how best to vocally diffuse the situation but then teach striking techniques that work for most people, most of the time. All FAST courses are between 3 and four hour long and are adjusted to work for groups aged 7 plus. FAST Defence is the only system that allows the student to defend against their attacker with full power strikes. Roger incorporates aspects of FAST into his Krav Maga classes. (As in assertiveness skills mentioned in email.)
Student testimonial:- '...You have good communication skills, treat everyone with respect and
you are a good motivator, you also add some humour which is important
and it is evident that you are a good practitioner of what you do.
I tend to like the power-striking techniques on pads and sparring with
gloves the most, but grappling and escape techiniques are equally
important.
The exercise last week to do with psychology of the fight, staring,
shouting, assertiveness etc. this is in my opinion the essence of
self defence and resolve .This emphasis on reality is what I
think separates Krav maga from the more traditionally sporty styles of
self defence. Please keep it up.' Jimmy Pellas.
